In spite of increased focus on cyber security breaches, ATM fraud continues to be a persistent issue for banks and their customers. At Peoples Bank, we want to help you use our network of ATMs safely and securely. In this article, we’ll explain how to spot ATM fraud so you can avoid falling victim to it.
1. Review your accounts on a regular basis.
Regularly reviewing your account transactions and monthly statements helps you stay on track with budgeting and financial goals, as well as alerting you to any unusual or suspicious transactions. Luckily, it’s easy to review your accounts anywhere, anytime, with Online Banking, E-Statements, and our Mobile Banking app. We also offer ID TheftSmart™ protection memberships to help you monitor and protect against identity theft.
2. Take advantage of account alerts.
Our Fraud Center allows you to receive account alerts to help protect your financial information. Peoples Bank will notify you by email, text, or phone call of potential fraud on your Peoples Bank Mastercard® Debit Card.
3. Check for card skimmers on ATMs.
Here’s how to check for card skimmers at ATMs and other card readers such as gas pumps.
- Inspect the ATM card slot before you insert your debit card.
- Pull on the card reader to see if it’s loose.
- Look for unusual details such as tape, dried glue, cracks, and/or scratches.
- Keep up this habit of inspecting card readers every time you use them.
4. Be aware of your surroundings when you use the ATM.
This last point isn’t on the cutting edge of technology, but it’s still worth repeating. Make sure no one in line behind you or otherwise nearby is close enough to watch you enter your PIN or capture your debit card number. Use your best judgement to determine when it’s safe for you to use the ATM.
